May is recognized as National Stroke awareness month and it is important to create awareness about the signs, symptoms, and treatment of stroke.
Stroke is a disease that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain.
A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts (or ruptures). When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood (and oxygen) it needs, so it and brain cells die.
What are the types of stroke?
Stroke can be caused either by a clot obstructing the flow of blood to the brain (called an ischemic stroke) or by a blood vessel rupturing and preventing blood flow to the brain (called a hemorrhagic stroke). A TIA (transient ischemic attack), or “mini stroke”, is caused by a temporary clot.
Beyond F.A.S.T., other symptoms you should know include:
- Sudden numbness or weakness of face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body
- Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech
- Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
- Sudden trouble walking, dizziness or loss of balance or coordination
- Sudden severe headache with no known cause NOTE THE TIME WHEN ANY SYMPTOMS FIRST APPEAR.
How Does Stroke Affect You?
During the initial evaluation with the physical therapist, they will evaluate the stroke survivor’s:
- Strength and endurance
- Range of motion
- Ability to walk and gait abnormalities
- Coordination and ability to sense one’s own body (proprioception)
- Ability to plan movement and motor actions (motor sequencing)
- Defects or problems with any of the senses such as vision, hearing, taste etc
Physical therapy treatment approaches post stroke:
- Positioning
- Strengthening
- Gait training
- Balance and Proprioception training
- Using different treatment approaches like PNF techniques, Brunnstorm Movement Therapy, Mirror Therapy, Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT), Bobath approach and NDT.
We understand that Stroke can be a life changing event. At IRAC, we are here to accompany you through your stroke recovery and help you regain movement, function, and the best possible quality of life.
