What is Parkinson’s Disease
Parkinson’s is a neurodegenerative disorder. Over time, this slowly progressing condition causes tremors, gait and balance issues, limb stiffness or rigidity, and a slow muscle movement.
Role of Physiotherapy
- To improve functional mobility, flexibility, and independence

- Coping strategies for Freezing and safe walking.
How can Physiotherapy help?
The goals of Physiotherapy will vary as per the stages of Parkinson:
- Early Stage: The key aim is to prevent inactivity and improve physical inability in terms of joint mobility and aerobic capacity.
- Mid Stage: This stage will aim to improve upper limb function as well as Posture, Gait, Balance, and Transfers. Cueing strategies may also be suggested to improve gait and overcome FREEZING. In addition, cognitive movement strategies may be taught which allow you to break down complex movements into a sequence of individual movement.
- Late stage: this stage aims to prevent complications that may arise as a result of using a wheelchair or being bedridden.
When should I see a Physiotherapist?
- You are uncertain about what type of exercise to do
- You find regular exercise difficult
- You have queries and concerns regarding the frequency, type, and intensity of exercise
- You experience balance and gait (walking) problems like turning, slowness, shuffling and freezing
- Difficulty to perform daily functional activities
