What is Shockwave therapy:
Shockwave Therapy, also known as ESWT or extracorporeal shockwave therapy, is a clinically proven approach to treating soft tissue injuries and pain, both acute and chronic. By delivering high-energy acoustic waves to the affected area, shockwave therapy can reduce pain, increase blood flow, stimulate collagen production, dissolve calcium deposits, and reverse chronic inflammation, all of which can speed up the
healing process.
ESWT is used in a variety of fields, including orthopaedics, sports medicine, physiotherapy, due to its non-surgical nature and ability to provide fast pain relief and restore mobility. Through various mechanisms, including the release of Substance P, the stimulation of nitric oxide and growth factors, and the dissolution of calcification,
shockwave therapy can address a range of conditions.
Conditions Treated with Shockwave Therapy:
- Plantar fasciitis
- Achilles tendinopathy
- Patella tendinopathy
- Gluteal tendinopathy
- Hamstring tendinopathy
- Quadricep tendinopathy
- Shin splints
- Rotator cuff tendinopathy
- Trochanteric bursitis
- Tennis elbow
- Golfer’s elbow
- Muscle strains
- Ligament sprains
Recommended Treatment Regimen:
(ESWT) is a treatment usually offered when chronic symptoms have persisted for at least 3-6 months and have not responded to conservative treatments, such as physiotherapy, activity modification, ice therapy, orthotics, painkillers, and steroid injection.
A course of ESWT treatment normally requires one treatment session a week for 3 consecutive weeks. Treatment should not be more than 2 weeks apart.
A follow up appointment will be arranged for 4-6 weeks after the last session to assess the response to ESWT.
3 further sessions maybe offered if symptoms have improved but not resolved.
ESWT is best utilised alongside a comprehensive rehabilitation programme.
